Swimming and Diving Teams End Regular Season on Strong Note
This past week, Colgate swimming and diving traveled to West Point, NY to compete in a tri-meet with Lafayette and Army. The Colgate men’s team earned its first Patriot League win against the Leopards of Lafayette with a final score of 187-93.
The men were not so fortunate in their match-up against Army, as they finished with a 168-118 loss. Colgate women’s swimming and diving swept the meet, crushing both opponents by 100 points or more. The women achieved their highest point total of the season with a 223-75 win over Lafayette and had a convincing 200-98 defeat over Army.
Dan Sweeney and Devon Healy led the men’s team with two wins apiece. Sweeney competed in the 50-yard freestyle and took first with a time of 21.28 seconds. He later contended in the 100-yard butterfly, capturing first.
He was trailed by two Raiders, Costas Hadipateras and Henry Bottger who took second and third, respectively, in the event.
Devon Healy won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:42.44.
He later triumphed in the 200-yard individual medley, just beating out teammate Trevor Healy by less than four seconds.
Costas Hadipateras, a true constant for the Raiders, also contributed to the team’s success with a win in the 200-yard butterfly at 1:52.97 and a first-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay along with teammates Sweeney, Tucker Gniewek and Patrick White.
Colgate women’s swimming and diving continued to dominate the scene. Senior and captain Erin McGraw was victorious in her three individual events: the 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly.
In the 200-yard freestyle, McGraw edged out fellow teammate Claire Hunter to finish with a time of 1:57.37. The 100-yard butterfly was the closest race of the night. McGraw touched out Army opponent Alyssa Tran by 0.07 seconds as McGraw finished the night competing with teammates Emma Santoro, Claire Hunter and fellow captain Caren Guyette in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Guyette triumphed in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:00.5 and then went on to take first in the 500-yard freestyle.
Erica Derlath also had a pair of wins in both the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley.
Kim Pilka, who has been a principal player in the women’s success this year, swept both diving events for the sixth time this season. She had winning scores of 268 in the 1-meter dive and 274.20 in the 3-meter dive.
The Raiders will continue to train hard until the Patriot League Championship.
“We are starting to back off on the yardage and do more quality work, more racing, which is called tapering before a big meet. By resting, our muscles aren’t sore for Patriots, and we’ll have a burst of energy that will allow us to fly in the pool,” freshman Tavy Smith said.
The Raiders go on hiatus until both teams travel to the Patriot League Championship at Bucknell February 17-19th.
