On October 1 and 2, the Colgate golf team travelled down to Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey to compete in the ECAC Championships. Following a disappointing finish at the Cornell Invitational, the Raiders bounced back against some of the toughest competition in the region. The tournament was won by Boston College, who finished with a total score of 594 (305-289). Mount Saint Mary’s University, who scored 605 and Fairfield University who scored 612 followed BC. Colgate placed sixth out of ten teams in the tournament, with a total score of 629. The Raiders stumbled out of the gate with a first round score of 322, but were able to rebound on the second day of the tournament with a score of 307.

Despite the team’s relatively mediocre performance as a whole, there were several very bright spots on an individual basis.

Colgate sophomore Will Delano, who has played consistently well throughout the 2010 season thus far, was tied for sixth in the end.

Delano came out firing, shooting a first-round 76, which put him tied for third after day one. He played even better on Saturday, shooting a final round of 74.

Scores were much better across the board on Saturday for the most part, however, which prevented Delano from elevating himself in the standings. Fellow sophomore Jack Linehan was the second bright spot for the Raiders, posting his strongest results thus far with a 13th-place finish. Linehan didn’t have any eye-opening rounds, but shot consistently throughout the weekend, finishing with a score of 78 on Friday and 77 on Saturday, running his two-day total to 155.

Colgate’s junior captain Ben Jessen finished the tournament with a 14-over-par 158. Jessen shot a solid first-round 78, but regressed slightly on Saturday with a day-two score of 80.

The Raiders will wrap up their season this coming weekend at the Lincoln Mercury Invitational, hosted by Seton Hall University in Bedminster, New Jersey.
