Campus Hit by Muggings

The Colgate community was shaken this week when it received notice from Campus Safety that two muggings had occurred on campus on the night of Sunday, February 15. No weapons were reportedly used. Early on the morning of Monday, February 16, a suspect was arrested by the Hamilton Police Department after a concerted effort by Campus Safety, the Hamilton Police, the Madison County Sheriff and the New York State Police. Campus Safety reported that the case was nearly closed.

As of print, there is no information available about the arrested person. Also as of print, there are no comments from the Colgate administration regarding the incidents, though Campus Safety has stated that they are maintaining “an elevated level of Campus Safety patrol on campus.” They recommend that students and faculty “walk in pairs and use well-lit pathways,” and say that escorts can be requested from their office by dialing 315-228-7333.

The first mugging, which occurred at 10 p.m., took place on Willow Path, while the second took place around midnight outside of 40 Broad St. The administration and Campus Safety have not responded to press inquiries.
