Track and Field Teams Take Flight at Cornell Relays

Although it would be much more entertaining to watch track and field events outdoors during this time of year, with runners trudging through snow and high-jumpers being forced to ice-skate before taking flight, there are many valid reasons for one of the original sports to move indoors at this time of year. Both the men’s and women’s track and field teams sent representatives to the Cornell Relays on Sunday, December 6

The Colgate women’s track and field team sent some of its best to the Cornell Relays for its first indoor event of the year. Senior Curry Knox, one of the few bright spots left in an otherwise depressing Seattle sports scene, represented the Emerald City well with a seventh-place finish in the 60-meter dash. Senior Ashley Mecone, the other Colgate participant in the event, took 11th. Four of the top five finishers were from Cornell, and Big Red runner Jeomi Maduka took first. In the 500-meter dash, sophomore Michelle Miller and junior Ashley Niness finished eighth and ninth, respectively. Once again, Cornell dominated, as the school took the top five spots. Junior Lauren Abuouf finished in eighth place out of 39 participants in the shot put, and first-year Megan Snell finished in 19th in the 300-meter dash.

For the men, first-year Alex Coco got lucky seventh in the 60-meter hurdles. Sophomore Gus Hobbs finished in last in the 60-meter finals, but he was also the last qualifier to make the cut-off in the preliminaries. In the 4 X 400 meter relays, the Colgate A, C and B teams finished in fourth, sixth and eighth respectively. The men took bronze in the 4 X 800 meter relay, but the highlight of the day was the men’s performance in the distance relay, as they won with a time of 10:32.34, more than 17 seconds faster than Binghamton.

Both Colgate squads will compete in a few more events before the illustrious Class of ’32 Invitational on Saturday, January 31.
