Miller Leads Women’s Track in Big Apple

cords were established and personal-best times were set when the women’s cross-country team competed in New York at the Lafayette/Rider Invite. First-year Michelle Miller, a rising star, rewrote the Colgate record in the 400-meter dash and also shattered the first-year mark in the 200-meter dash. Her time ranks second all-time at Colgate and is fifth overall in the Patriot League this season. Not to be outdone, sophomore Sarah Chabal achieved a season-best leap in the long jump, while sophomore Emily Oliver and junior Curry Knox boasted various personal-best times in their respective races.

Miller’s record-breaking 400-meter dash buried the previous one, which stood for 15 years. Tara McLaughlin held that title with a time of 58.12 and Miller’s time on Saturday was 57.81. That run was also faster than Miller’s previous personal-best, which was recently achieved at the St. Valentine Invitational at Boston University. Miller finished the race seventh out of 57 opponents. Of course, none of this is very surprising considering the fact that she has run faster in each subsequent race this season.

Chabal, who headlines the sophomore class on the team, has not only had her share of record-breaking feats this season, but qualified for the Patriot League finals in the long and triple jumps with her most recent performance. She posted a leap of 5.26 meters – a season-high and close to her own personal-best. Meanwhile, Chabal’s classmate, Oliver had another strong showing in the mile by running a personal-best time of 5:18.99, three seconds lower than her previous best. Knox finished the 60-meter dash in 8.10, also a season-best for her.

Both the men’s and women’s track and field teams will compete in the Patriot League Championships at Bucknell this weekend.
