Men’s Tennis Crashes Cornell for Invitational

The men’s tennis finished its fall season last weekend at the Cornell Fall Indoor Invitational in Ithaca. Unfortunately, the Raiders could not end the fall season on a high note, as the team struggled in both singles and doubles.

In Flight A singles, junior Martin MacIntyre and senior John Nogueras both went 1-2. MacIntyre lost a tough three-set match in the opening round to Duquesne’s Alex Mast, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. But the junior captain and the sophomore surfer bounced back, as both were able to pick up a win in the consolation draw. MacIntyre defeated Chris Coley of Marist, 8-6, while Nogueras squeaked out a tight victory over Navy’s Alex James, 9-8.

In Flight B Singles, rookie Phil Bernasek won his first round match against Binghamton’s Andreas Danielsson. After dropping the opening set, 3-6, Bernasek stormed back to take the final two sets, 6-3, 6-4. In the second round, Bernasek put forth a great effort, but fell to Marcelo Mazzeto of Buffalo, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Colgate picked up two victories in Flight D singles from senior Sam Jacobson and first-year Reid Kiyabu. Jacobson faced Army’s Matt Kuwamoto in the first round. The senior rallied after losing the first set, 3-6 to take the final two sets by matching scores of 6-3. Kiyabu had no problem with Buffalo’s Ezra Bernstein, as he won convincingly, 6-2, 6-3. Unfortunately, Kiyabu and Jacobson could not continue their winning ways in the second round, as both were defeated in straight sets.

In doubles action, the lone Colgate victory came from the duo of senior Tyler Deck and MacIntyre, who defeated Marist’s Loci Sessegesimi and Chris Coley, 8-5 in the first round of the Flight A Doubles flight.

The men’s tennis team will commence its spring season at the Army Invitational in January.
