Hayes Leads Gold at ECAC Championship

The golf team traveled to Charlestown, Rhode Island last weekend for the ECAC Championship and finished tied for tenth with Holy Cross out of a field of 14 teams. Colgate shot a two-round total of 616 and finished 20 strokes behind ECAC Champion St. Bonaventure.

Senior Ricky Hayes finished first among Colgate golfers and 15th overall. Hayes shot a 9-over-151 (72, 79). His first-round score tied him for seventh-best overall after the first day of play. It was recently announced that Hayes was named Patriot League Golfer of the Month for September. In five-rounds of play last month, Hayes shot a total of one-over-par and had a scoring average of a mere 71 shots per round, which earned him this prestigious honor.

Colgate’s other golfers in the championship were juniors Keaton Cross and Montek Mayal, sophomore David Ake and first-year Neil Thompson. Cross shot a 12-over-par 154 (78, 76), which placed him tied for 28th overall for the weekend. Mayal shot two rounds of 78 for a two-day total of 156. Despite being only two shots behind Cross, he finished 13 places behind his classmate. Ake (81, 76) finished tied for 45th with a two-round score of 157. Rounding out the Colgate effort was Thompson (79, 82), who shot a 19-over-par 161.

The Raiders will finish their fall season by traveling to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to take part in the Lehigh Invitational this weekend. Colgate has had their two best finishes of the season in Patriot League Tournaments, including the historic victory in the Colgate Invitational last month.
