Golf Gets Feathers Ruffled at Dallio Memorial
The name of DePaul’s golf course(Ruffled Feathers) is appropriate considering Colgate golf’s performance earlier this week, as the Raiders finished 11th out of 13 teams at the John Dallio Memorial. No other Patriot League team participated in the John Dallio Memorial and Colgate was not familiar with the 12 other competitors in the field. Detriot Mercy played the role of the fox in the hen house, dominating the field by finishing ten strokes ahead of second place Northern Iowa and 48 strokes better than Colgate’s 928.
First-year Neil Thompson continued his exciting rookie season by leading all Raiders with a 10-over-par 226, which was good enough for 16th place. He finished nine strokes behind the tournament winner, Jordan Weber of Northern Iowa. Senior Ricky Hayes finished 27th overall, marking the first time this season that he was not Colgate’s top finisher. Junior Montek Mayal shot an 18-over-par 234 and had the best single round for Colgate when he earned a 69 in the third and final round. Senior Keaton Cross mustered a 25-over 241. Junior Alex Plunkett and sophomore David Ake tied for 70th place with 36-over-par 252’s.
Prior to play at the John Dallio Memorial, Golf Digest and ESPN released their college golf rankings. Colgate placed 149th in a balanced ranking of nearly 800 collegiate programs that included teams from Divisions I, II, and III. The ranking placed the Raiders ahead of Patriot League foes American and Holy Cross, but behind Lehigh, Army, Bucknell and Navy. Surprisingly, Navy ranked the highest in the Patriot League at 58th in the nation, edging two-time defending Patriot League champs Bucknell. In the “Athletics First” ratings, Colgate placed 45th in the nation, second in the Patriot League only to Bucknell.
The Raiders will next tee off on October 14 in Charlestown, Rhode Island, for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship. Colgate will look to improve on its recent performances and hopefully match its first place finish at the Colgate Invitational.
