Jabberwock and Vibe Let It Fly

Over spring break, Colgate University’s ultimate Frisbee club traveled to Savannah, Georgia to compete in the High Tide tournament. Facing schools from across the country, both the men’s team, the Jabberwock, and the women’s team, the Vibe, exceeded expectations for their first tournament of the spring.

The men’s team started off quickly against Wentworth Institute of Technology in their first game. Playing with intensity from start to finish, Colgate rolled to a 13-7 victory. Unfortunately, the rest of the day did not go well for the Jabberwock, as they fell to Colorado State, 13-6 and Georgia-B, 13-4.

Rebounding quickly, the Jabberwock found their stride on the second day. Senior captain Cody Tipton recorded a Callahan (an interception in the opponent’s endzone), and sophomore captain Chris Tonry had numerous blocks and goals as Colgate put up impressive victories over Wisconsin-Platteville, 13-4, Connecticut College-B, 13-3, and American University, 13-5.

On the final day, the Jabberwock found themselves down 5-2 against Yale University before going on an 11-2 run to take the game, 13-7. The Jabberwock failed to duplicate that effort in their second game, though, falling to Ithaca, 9-12.

Meanwhile, the newly-formed women’s team continued to improve throughout the week against much more experienced programs. On the second day, they played a close game with American University, fighting to an 13-8 loss.

In their next game though, the Vibe, led by sophomore captain Allison Bush, held onto a small lead in a battle of attrition against Case Western Reserve University that was eventually capped because of time restraints. Needing one more goal to secure the victory, Bush threw a pass to the corner of the endzone where sophomore Katlin Gnojek made a diving catch to give the young team their first victory.

This weekend, the team travels to Stony Brook, New York, to compete against 20 other teams from New York, Pennsylvania, and New England.
