Swimmers Take Dive: Retrievers Oust Raiders

The Colgate Men’s and Women’s swimming and diving team both fell to the UMBC Retrievers by the scores of 166-108 and 161.5-133.5 respectively. In the men’s meet, UMBC won 15 out of the 16 events and improved their record to 3-1. The men’s team struggled in the event overall, however junior Zach Whitman did earn a victory in the 100-yard butterfly with an impressive time of 52.19. Senior captain Zach Grobengieser earned second place in the 100 free, and third place in the 50 free. Sophomore Steven Haskin led the diving team with two impressive second place finishes on both the 1 and 3 meter diving boards.

The Women’s team fell in 13 out of the 16 events to UMBC. Despite the loss, the Raider earned an individual victory and swept the relays against the Retrievers. Sophomore Beverly Walker emerged victorious in the 100 yard butterfly of 59.22. She also earned second places in both the 100 and 200 yard backstroke with times of 59.85 and 2:10.12 respectively. First-year Katie Murphy finished second in the same event with a time of 59.34. Murphy also led to Raider relay teams to first place finishes in 200 yard medley relay and the 400 yard freestyle relay. For the diving team, Senior Gretchen Swarr finished in third place for both the 1 and 3 meter boards.

The Women’s team travels next to Maryland for the Terrapin Invite from November 16-18. The Men’s team next hosts Dartmouth at the Linebury Natatorium on November 10.
