The Colgate men’s soccer team had an eventful two weeks as they continued their unbeaten streak in the Patriot League and ended their four game winless streak with a win at home.

After suffering their first loss of the season, the Raiders regrouped for a tough road game at Navy. The Colgate men entered the game second in the league and knew that a win would solidify a spot in the Patriot League tournament

The two squads could not decide the game in regulation and looked to overtime to find the winning goal. The Raiders came close to scoring several times, but in the end the two teams each earned a point in a 0-0 tie.

“We definitely played well enough to win the game,” Head Erik Coach Ronning said. “We had many scoring opportunities and we had the better of Navy in the game. I know the guys felt they deserved the win, but we got another crucial point in the Patriot League standings.”

In Colgate’s next game facing American this time, sophomore goalie David Cappuccio played hero as he recorded a crucial penalty kick save in the last twenty minutes of regulation. Cappuccio made another critical save in the overtime, and the game ended in a scoreless tie.

“I felt we played fair and could have been a more organized on defense,” Ronning said. “Cappuccio played well in these two Patriot League games and I am happy we got two points in two games. Even so, we have to start capitalizing on our scoring opportunities and close out teams.”

Next up was for Colgate was the Cornell Big Red. The men got off to a quick start on a very wet night in Hamilton, scoring just eight minutes into the game. After great passing by the Raiders midfield, senior Devin Deane received the ball and set up junior Eric Anton for an easy breakaway goal.

But Anton was not done for the night. Deane and first-year Chris Ross were credited with the assists on the junior’s second goal, a left-footed rocket into the back of the net. It was Ross’ first career point and Deane’s second assist of the game.

The 2-0 victory snapped the team’s four-game winless streak and increased the Raiders overall record to 7-1-5. The tie put Colgate in third in the Patriot League standings with a 2-0-3 record. The team sits one point behind Lafayette and six points behind Lehigh. Colgate also remained perfect at home this season, as they are 5-0-1 at Van Doren Field.

Cappuccio’s great play over the past week earned him the honor of Patriot League BRINE Goalkeeper the Week. In addition, Cappuccio is now in the NCAA history books with the fifth longest all-time consecutive shutout streak at 835:55 minutes.

The men have their biggest Patriot League game this weekend, as they square off against nationally ranked Lehigh at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Van Doren Field.
