Heavy rains, snowy conditions and cold temperatures may have postponed much of the first week of intramural softball, but none of these weather-related obstacles could put a stop to the Colgate Intramural Softball season preview.

League A seems to be a complete toss-up at the start of the season. Theta Chi has lost a number of its star fielders due to graduation last year, while Cobra Chi A has had a very lackluster intramural year to say the least. Delta Upsilon (DU) A and Donkey Ranch are top performers in seemingly every intramural sport, but the team to watch out of League A this season is Phi Kappa Tau (Phi Tau) A. Phi Tau’s dominating victory over Theta Chi to start the season on Monday may very well spark the squad to an undefeated regular season in League A.

While League A is largely dominated by fraternities, League B is comprised of three varsity-athlete teams. DU B may have “B” in their team name, but this team of slugging ex-football players will likely be the top team in both its league and its house at season’s end. The hockey team features two teams in League B: Shooter McGavin & Company and the Dream Team. Beta Theta Pi (Beta) A and the Great Colgate Ball Club round out the league, and it is likely that these two squads will be in a battle to stay out of last place with difficult seasons upcoming.

League C features one of the most eclectic groups of teams in softball competition.The defending Division I Champion Yo Mets have a depleted roster this spring, and their only hope for a championship might be within the league.$11.49 and the Blazers had great intramural basketball seasons and look to bring their court karma to Whitnall Field for the first time. The Brothers are the fourth League C team and, despite their poor intramural year, the team looks to rebound in what should be a wide-open league.

The league with the largest Greek contingent is League D, where all five teams represent fraternities.Phi Tau B, Cobra Chi B, Theta Chi B and Beta B all find themselves in this league, but the team to watch might be Phi Delta Theta (Phi Delt).Phi Delt brings the most intramural experience and the best bats to a relatively inexperienced league, so look for them to be atop the league standings in May.

League E features two mainstays in this year’s intramural competition. the Diabeatings and the LNA Pound R’s.The Diabeatings have the best lineup in the league by far, but the LNA Pound R’s have had the Diabeatings’ number in other sports this year and look to continue the trend this spring.Phi Tau J and the Pig Slammers look to make noise under the radar in the league, but look to 151 High Octane to make a strong run at the League E crown if it can get by the Diabeatings and the LNA Pound R’s.

The three lowest leagues feature many teams that have never previously played intramural softball. League F teams like Brother 2 Brother and the Pep Band, but look to Mike Siever’s Best Friend to shake out the growing pains and take the League F crown thanks to its senior-laden roster and athleticism.

League G is the competition’s only coed league, with each team’s roster comprised of both men and women. With new teams like the Crazy Flamingos, Counter Revolution and The Deadweight Loss, picking a winner in the preseason in this league is at best accomplished by throwing a dart at a dartboard.

League H is the only women’s league, comprised of Gamma Phi Beta, the Silver Snakes and Gatehouse.The team to watch in this league, however, is Poseidon’s Wrath. These goddesses of the ocean should walk away at season’s end with the League H title.
