The spring ultimate frisbee season ended on a bittersweet note for the Jabberwock last weekend, as the Colgate Ultimate team came up just short in its bid to advance to the regional tournament despite matching the best finish in the program’s history.

On the first day of play, the Jabberwock split four games, posting decisive wins against both SUNY-Geneseo and Union. Unfortunately, Colgate wasted a big halftime lead against SUNY-Buffalo, falling by one goal. Additionally, Colgate suffered a loss to Cornell for the second time in three weeks. The highlight of the day came when sophomore Barnes Kelley recorded two straight Callahan goals (interceptions in the opponent’s end zone) against Buffalo.

After defeating Ithaca to begin the second day of games, Colgate took on Skidmore for the chance to challenge Rochester for the fifth and final seed of the tournament. The two teams traded goals early on, but the Jabberwock went on a 4-0 run behind senior Gavin Gregory’s numerous defensive stops and classmate Greg Mole’s deep scoring runs. Skidmore made the game close at the end, but senior Steve Wai secured the Jabberwock’s first victory against Skidmore with a layout block on the game’s final point. Unfortunately, Colgate failed to match that effort in its next game, falling to Rochester for the second time this spring.

Wai, who has co-captained the team with classmate Nicolo Giorgi for the last three years, summed up the weekend well: “Although we missed the bid to regionals by one game, I’m still very proud of what this team has accomplished.”

Such accomplishments included the team’s first-ever wins against Syracuse and Skidmore and a sixth-place finish at sectionals, matching the program’s best finish from three years ago.
