Delta Upsilon B Captures IM B-Ball Title

The intramural basketball season drew to a sensational close last night, but not before a number of exciting finishes in both the semifinal and final rounds of action. The Division I Champion came as no surprise to those who have been following intramural basketball: Delta Upsilon (DU) B.In the most lopsided of the four semifinal match-ups, DU B ran over its brothers from DU A, scoring in bunches and never looking back in a 65-43 pounding of its intra-house rivals. The story of the game was senior All-American linebacker Jared Nepa, who knocked down eight first-half three-pointers in the victory last February 16.The other Division I Semifinal pitted the sixth-seeded Great Colgate Ballers against the seventh-seeded LNA Pound R’s. In a physical, low-scoring battle the LNA Pound R’s ran over an unprepared and depleted Great Colgate Ballers squad, scoring a 38-33 upset. Thus, the stage was set for last night’s Division I Championship. The game was marked by an-LNA controlled pace, as DU B could not rely on its dominant inside presence or fiery three-point shooting that it displayed against DU A.In fact, the halftime score was 17-15 LNA Pound R’s, with sophomore Chris Tonry scoring eight of the team’s 17 points at the break.DU B was lead at the intermission by senior Jason Danowski’s six points. Not much changed in the second half, as both teams continued to engage in a physical, low-scoring slugfest.LNA led much of the second half until the last four minutes, when Nepa’s three-point play with just over three minutes left gave DU B a lead it would not relinquish. The LNA Pound R’s maintained possession for the entire last minute of play, but fell short on a 30-foot attempt at the buzzer. DU B thus escaped a 30-27 winner over their pesky sophomore opponents. The major shock in the Division II bracket came in the semifinals, where the 7-0 $11.49 team lost to Old School, 55-46.The signs of a upset-to-come were quite apparent as early as the quarterfinal round for $11.49, as the Diabeatings gave the League C champs a tight battle before falling. What the Diabeatings could not do, Old School did with relative ease, controlling the pace and the outcome of the first of two Division II semifinals. On the other side of the Division II bracket, the second-seeded Blazers continued their February good-luck streak with an easy 54-46 defeat of the Townhausers. In the Division II Championship, Old School established itself as the tone-setter from the start.A 29-21 Old School halftime lead was highlighted by a 12-point effort from Aurelius Henderson, who went 6-of-8 from the free throw stripe. The second half saw much of the same, as Old School took control early and outscored the Blazers by five in the second half on its way to a 55-40 win.Although Blazers’ sophomore Bobby Campbell led his team with 17 points, including a 10-point second half, the Old School trio of Henderson, Chris MacFarlane (12 points) and former Colgate hockey defenseman Steve Silversides ’03 was far too much for the Blazers to handle. Thus, one of the most exciting and entertaining intramural basketball seasons comes to an end at Colgate. The Rec Sports office would like to both thank every team that participated and encourage each team to take part in the final three intramural sports of the year: volleyball, dodgeball and softball.
