Arctic Refuge

Like the rest of the nation, the environmental community is focused on the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. At the same time, we are determined to prevent proponents of oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from taking advantage of this moment to do greater damage to our environment. It will take 10 years of drilling to yield only about 5 months of usable oil, far into the future. And, so we press on to protect the nation’s premier wildlife habitat.

CUTS IN COLLEGE LOAN PROGRAMS AND ARCTIC DRILLING…

WHAT DO THEY HAVE IN COMMON?

The Budget Reconciliation Bill.

Stop Congress from reducing the budget deficit by cutting programs that feed poor people, help youth afford college, and with money from only 5 months of usable oil from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Is 10 years of oil drilling worth five months of oil? Is $11 Billion in cuts to Pell grants and other loan programs worth sacrificing college opportunities?
