Women’s Soccer Falls To ‘Cuse, Rebounds Against Albany

The Colgate women’s soccer team is off to a strong start to this season. After a weekend sweep to begin the year, the team fell to Syracuse before getting back on the winning track with a win against Albany. On Friday, Colgate played its first away game of the year when the team traveled to Syracuse to take on the Orange. Syracuse jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by scoring in the first five minutes of the contest and attempted to hold off the Raiders, but first-year sensation Franny Iacuzzi scored in the 80th minute to tie the score. Unfortunately, it was Syracuse who pounced on a loose ball a few minutes later and scored into an empty net with just over five minutes remaining in the contest. The opportunity came off of a misplay by sophomore goaltender Luisa Miller, who made six saves in the losing effort. The loss marked the first of the season for the Raider women and the eighth consecutive time that the Orange have defeated Colgate. The team got back on the winning track two days later in Albany by dominating the Great Danes, 3-1. Colgate outshot its opponent by a margin of 28-3 on its way to a 3-1 victory, with Iacuzzi continuing her excellent play by scoring two more goals. The team was impressive on both ends of the field, as first-year goalie Carly Sousa was forced to make only one save in the game.Without a doubt the story of the season so far has been Iacuzzi. The first-year has scored six goals and registered two assists in just four games, giving her a total of fourteen points. While Iacuzzi may rightly collect individual accolades for her work, the team’s overall performance has been excellent as well. The team has averaged nearly two more goals than its opponent in its three wins and has more than doubled its opponent’s number of shots. While Colgate has only outscored its opponents 2-1 in the first half of games, the Raiders dominate the second half, having outscored their opponents by a 9-3 differential. The Colgate women’s soccer team looks to continue its winning ways this weekend when it travels to St. Mary’s to face off against the home team and California-Berkeley. The team’s next home game will be next Saturday when Bucknell comes to Hamilton.
