On Saturday, April 8, the Colgate women’s lacrosse team played a tough home game against the Navy Midshipmen. The Colgate Raiders lost 10-20, but did not go down without a fight.                             

The Mids netted a goal within the first minute of the game, but sophomore goalie Asil Asfour had two clutch saves to prevent Navy from keeping their momentum. Senior attack Isabel Kreitler assisted junior midfielder Haley O’Hanlon for the first goal of the game by Colgate. Kreitler then scored two back-to-back goals within a span of two minutes. Navy was able to get another goal back, but it was not long before first-year midfielder Alissa Massini put one away for Colgate.

Navy then had four back-to-back goals in the span of approximately four minutes, putting them at a 6-4 lead. Kreitler went on to net her third goal of the game, with 12:27 left in the first half. Senior attack Morgan Young then completed a hat trick, with two quick goals for Navy shortly after. Masini put another one in net before Navy finished off the half with two more goals. At halftime, the Mids had the advantage over the Raiders, with a 9-6 lead.

Kreitler started the second half strong for the Raiders, with two more unassisted goals within the first four minutes of the second half. However, junior midfielder Jenna Collins replied quickly with two more goals for Navy. With 22:31 left to go in the game, Navy had the lead over Colgate 11-8. With an assist from sophomore midfielder Charlotte Redican, O’Hanlon netted her second goal of the game for the Raiders. Navy then fired six goals to give them a 17-9 advantage over the Raiders. First-year attack Payton Gabriel paused the Mids scoring streak by netting one for Colgate, with 4:44 left in the game. Towards the end of the game, Navy was able to solidify their victory with three more goals. The game ended with a Navy win, 20-10.

This brings the Raiders to a 4-7 overall and 1-4 Patriot league record. Asfour beat her career-high of nine saves, with ten saves against Navy. Kreitler scored five goals total, which is equivalent to her career high. O’Hanlon had four ground balls, which was the game high for the Raiders. She also had three caused turnovers and five draw controls.

“We knew going into this game that Navy was going to be a tough opponent. They have always been one of the toughest competitors in the Patriot League. As a team we played extremely well in the first half, and we were connected on the defensive end, offensive end and in the midfield. We were right there with Navy, but in the second half we made unforced errors that gave Navy possession, which turned into goals for them. We have a full week to practice and work on what we need to in order to win our games these next few weeks,” O’Hanlon said.

The Raiders will go to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania to take on the Bucknell Bison next weekend. They will play at 1 p.m. on Saturday, and the game will be live streamed. They also have another Patriot League game against Army West Point on Wednesday, April 19 at 5 p.m. The game will take place at Beyer-Small ’76 field in Hamilton.
