Barclays Premier League Update

Manchester City:

Currently residing at the top of the table, City has enjoyed a promising first 10 games to the season which has established them, by many pundits, as the clear favorites to win the title this year. The recent acquisitions of Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne have justified their massive $103 million combined transfer fee, with both players hitting the ground running and offering huge improvements upon last year’s squad.  De Bruyne, in particular, has arguably been the best player in the Premier League, boasting 3 assists and 3 goals in his eight League appearances. Though they faced a frustrating draw away to archrival Manchester United in last weekend’s game, City fans will feel confident that this improved squad will continue this form throughout the year.

Arsenal F.C.:

Tied with Manchester City in points, however behind in goal differential, Arsenal find themselves in second place 10 games into the season. Very unlike Manchester City, Arsenal made only one summer signing.  The acquisition of the goalkeeper Petr Cech from Chelsea has proven to be one of the signings of the season, as he has averaged the highest shot save percentage in the league. Coming off very strong performances resulting in wins against Everton, Manchester United and Bayern Munich in the last two weeks, many commentators are suggesting this year may be Arsenal’s best chance to win the league in recent memory.  Key players such as Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Laurent Koscielny have all been dominant within these fixtures. If the team can avoid the injury problems that often plague Arsenal players, they are likely to be Manchester City’s chief title contender come the end of the season.

Manchester United:

Louis Van Gaal’s Manchester United squad are in fourth place, having gained a respectable 20 points from 10 games.  Though the team spent more money than any other team in the transfer window, only two of their recent signings have fulfilled or exceeded their expectations.  Bastian Schweinsteiger has established himself as a key member of the Red Devil’s midfield, while 19 year-old Anthony Martial has been a key source of United’s recent goals.  With a solid, but unspectacular beginning to their season, Manchester United fans will hope that the massive depth within their squad will be an important factor in the later, more tiring parts of the long Premier League season.

Liverpool:

With an underwhelming start to the season, Liverpool reside in ninth place, having only won three of their first ten games.  The team has recently undergone a change in management, with many fans hopeful that Jurgen Klopp will return Liverpool to former greatness. Promoting a philosophy that rewards closing down the opposition and pressing a high game pace, it will be interesting to see if Klopp can turn this team around. Thus far, Klopp has managed the team through two premier league games, both of which have been ties.  Clearly, this team will have to elevate their game if they hope to achieve their own lofty expectations.

Chelsea F.C.:

The former champions, Chelsea have suffered a historically horrible start to their season, sitting in 15th place.  Everyone at the club has been hugely frustrated with the shocking drop of quality in the recent performances.  Formerly dominant players such as Fabregas, Matic and Hazard have all been uncharacteristically quiet on the pitch.  Time will tell if these players will be able to regain their former confidence and hopefully save this Chelsea team from what has been an embarrassing beginning for the club this season.
