This past Friday the women’s hockey team traveled down the road to Schenectady, N.Y. to take on Union College. 

The first two periods of action were slow for both Colgate and Union. However, early in the third, a Union player, Christine Valente, netted a goal off a power play to give the Dutchwomen a 1-0 lead. Less than eight seconds later, Colgate’s rookie forward, Shelby Perry pulled off the equalizing tally with a goal from rookie forward Shelby Perry. 

The Colgate offense was relentless on attack for the entirety of the final period, culminating in a goal from sophomore defender, Cat Quiron. 

With less than two minutes remaining in the contest, the Dutchwomen pulled their goalie giving them an extra skater on offense. This led to a goal for Union, knotting the game at 2-2 going into overtime. 

Colgate and Union each had a chance on a power play, although neither team could tally a final goal, resulting in a 2-2 tie. Junior net minder Ashlynne Rando recorded 22 saves on the night while the Raiders offense out-shot the Dutchmen 38 to 24. 

“Tonight was an exciting game. It had a little bit of everything with both teams carrying play at different times. There were some great saves and a lot of emotion on every goal. The penalty shot and the penalty kill in overtime were very exciting too,” said head coach Greg Fargo when asked about the teams performance.

Just a day later, the team took on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. The Raiders got off to a very slow start, allowing four uncontested goals to begin the contest. 

Despite the slow start, it was a high scoring affair as Colgate began to rally in the middle of the third period. Senior forward Miriam Drubel netted a goal off an assist from senior Taylor Craig. 

Less than two and a half minutes later, senior Melissa Kueber tallied her 10th goal off the season. Just a minute after her first goal of the night, Kueber scored again off a pass from freshman forward Bre Wilson-Bennet. Kueber’s two goals within 1:03 was the second fastest scoring span in Colgate women’s hockey history. 

The third period began with a RPI lead of 4-3. Two Colgate penalties early in the third period resulted in a 5-on-3 power play for RPI. Alex Gruschow registered a goal off the power play for RPI,

increasing their lead to 5-3. 

The Raiders suffered throughout the game from penalties, as four of the five goals they allowed were on power plays. Between the Raiders’ inability to convert on offensive chances and giving up multiple power play opportunities, RPI

prevailed with a final score of 5-3 in what was a closely contested game.

  

Unfortunately the season came to an end for women’s hockey team after the game against RPI. 

“From a results standpoint, this hasn’t been the season we imagined. The highs were really high and the lows were challenging for this group. All the experiences this year will help us to improve,” Fargo said about the 2014-2015 season. 

“We have a lot of good things to look forward to in this program looking ahead and we can’t wait to get started. It’s going to be an offseason of growth for the group that’s returning.”

    

The team finished the year with a cumulative record of 7-25-2 while posting a 4-16-2 record in conference play. The women hope to get better and this offseason and come back stronger and more prepared than ever for the 2015-2016 campaign.
