Field Hockey Wins At Holy Cross

This past weekend the Raiders finished their season with a League match-up against Holy Cross. Traveling to Worcester, Mass, the Raiders (4-13) overcame an early deficit and toppled the Crusaders (5-12) by a score of 3-1.

The Raiders, competing in their final game of the season, fell behind early to the Crusaders. Scoring on a breakaway eight minutes into the game, the

Crusaders held an early lead.

Attempting to get back in the game, the Raiders went on the offensive and tried to get on the board. With 12:25 left, the Raiders attack came through. After junior attack Eliana Brown shot on net, senior midfielder Meredith Gibson put back the rebound to get the Raiders

on board.

Tied up at one, the Raiders had newfound hope in the contest and kept up their momentum. The Raiders cracked the Crusaders defense again, scoring with 3:48 remaining in the half. After another scramble in front of the net, senior attack Halle Biggar found the ball in front of her and put the ball in back of the net to put the Raiders up 2-1.

Heading into halftime, the Raiders held a lead and an advantage in shots with nine on net compared to the Crusaders’ five.

Coming out firing in the second half, the Raiders continued their offensive

attack and kept up the pressure on the Crusaders’ defense. With 14 minutes remaining in the game, Brown fired a shot that found its way in the back of the net.

Brown’s goal gave the Raiders a 3-1 lead and after a strong defensive effort in the remaining minutes, the Raiders came away with a big 3-1 victory in their last game of the season.

The Raiders struggled through non-conference play, but their record in the Patriot League is much more indicative of their performance. The Raiders placed fifth in the League and finished just one space outside of making the Patriot

League tournament.

The Raiders will dearly miss Biggar next season. Biggar logged 1095 minutes this season and scored a team-leading 13 goals and added an assist. looking to step up in Biggar’s absence will be Brown who scored 10 goals and added three assists for the team.

In goal, the Raiders return junior Amanda DiDomizio who started and played in 16 out of the Raiders 17 games this season. In addition, the Raiders will return two of their starting defenseman in junior Rebecca Libutti and sophomore Jessica Gardiner.
