Lathrop Hall reopened its doors in December as the new location of the English, Writing and Rhetoric and University Studies Departments. It is also the new home of the Writing and Speaking Center. Julia Queller reported that the $9.45 million renovations highlight some of the old architectural features of Lathrop and also include updated technology in the classrooms and a climate control system. The project was also designed to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification in order to keep with Colgate’s mission to be more environmentally friendly. The certification involved providing Lathrop with more natural light and the building was reinsulated in order to conserve energy. The furniture, flooring and light fixtures also incorporate materials that are environmentally friendly.

The first phase of the renovation, which was completed in 2011, refurbished the first floor and basement of Lathrop. The latest renovations were the second and final phase of the project. The renovations restored Lahtrop’s classic vaulted ceilings, plaster ornamentation, two-story windows and ornamental railings. The museum space in Lathrop was converted into a two story lounge and study space for students.
