Men’s Ice Hockey falls to Big Red at Home

The men’s ice hockey team played the Big Red of Cornell University in an exhilarating and well-matched game on Friday November 2. Despite the valiant effort by the Raiders, Colgate fell to Cornell, 3 goals to 1.

The starting line-up for Colgate was senior captains Jeremy Price and Nathan Sinz on defense, sophomore John Lidgett and first-years Mike Borkowski and Darcy Murphy on offense and junior Eric Mihalik in goal.

To Colgate’s chagrin, Cornell scored their first goal during the first minute. In the next few minutes, the offensive trio of Lidgett, Borkowski and Murphy played strongly in front of the Cornell goal, but to no avail. In the fourth minute, first-year Ryan Johnston had a promising but unsuccessful shot on goal from defense.

A fight at 4:51 resulted in a Colgate penalty on sophomore Spiro Goulakos for roughing. This was followed by a Cornell penalty at 6:59. During this power play, Borkowski had a good shot on goal, but the puck hit the crossbar. At 15:25, Mihalik had a great save, ef- fectively getting the puck out of the Colgate goal area. By

tent in front of the goal, but Mihalik made a series of great saves, and the Raiders were eventually able to get Cornell away from their goal.

During another Colgate power play, Goulakos had a great shot from defense, but the very tal- ented Cornell goalie was able to save it. At 19:52 Colgate received another penalty for holding on first-year Tylor Spink.

The third period started with 52 seconds left of a Colgate power kill. At 5:51, Murphy had a great play, successfully taking the puck from Cornell. At 6:20, Lidgett made a similar play, gracefully robbing Cornell of the puck. At 9:04, first-year Kevin Lough had a nice play, effectively keeping the puck within the blue line.

At 13:03, the Raiders had a shot on goal, sparking a fight in front of the Cornell net. This resulted in a penalty on both Lidgett and a Cornell player for roughing. In the last minute of play, Col- gate pulled Mihalik from goal. Unfortunately, Cornell was able to make a break-away, scoring at 19:31.

The Raiders will face off against the Quinnipiac bobcats this Friday night.

the end of the first period, Cornell’s goalie had made 24 saves, while Mihalik only had to make two – indicative of the greater amount of shots made by Colgate.

The second period began with a couple of great saves by Mihalik. At 5:16, Cornell received a penalty. At 6:53, during the Colgate power play, senior

defenseman and captain Thomas Larkin successfully kept the puck within the blue line, allowing Murphy the opportunity to shoot a fantastic goal.This goal was Murphy’s fifth of the season, and it was assisted by Larkin.

Cornell promptly retaliated at 8:00 with a goal. During the 15th minute, Cornell was very persistent in front of the goal, but Mihalik made a series of great saves, and the Raiders were eventually able to get Cornell away from their goal.
