Colgate Welcomes New Dean of the College with Ice Cream Social

On Friday, March 30, Colgate President Jeffrey Herbst hosted an ice cream social in honor of Suzy Nelson, who will become Colgate’s new Vice President and Dean of College in late June.

The social, which took place in the O’Connor Campus Center (Coop), was intended to allow stu-dents and faculty the opportunity to meet Nelson.

Nelson has been the Dean of Stu-dent Life at Harvard University since 2007. She was also the Assistant Dean of Residential Life at Harvard, Robert G. Engel Associate Dean of Students at Cornell University and held other administrative positions at Syracuse University, Siena College and Bowling Green State University.

Prior to her career in higher ed-ucation, Nelson taught English in the Sherburne-Earlville and Cam-den Central school districts, both of which are in Colgate’s vicinity.

In a press release published on Colgate’s website, Nelson spoke of her eagerness to not only join Col-gate’s administration, but also to return to the Hamilton area.

“I am eager to embrace this new professional opportunity,” Nelson said. “Personally, this move will also allow our family to return to the beautiful Upstate New York region where my husband, our four children and I have roots.”

According to the Dean of the Col-lege Mission Statement on Colgate’s website, “The dean of the college’s staff actively contributes to student learning through the purposeful integration of the curriculum and the co-curriculum.”
