Men’s and Women’s Tennis End Patriot League Play

Mens and Womens Tennis End Patriot League Play

The Colgate men’s and women’s tennis teams played through another packed week-end as they both faced off against Bucknell and Lehigh to finish off their Patriot League regular seasons. The women were able to pull off a 4-3 win against the Bison, but lost to Lehigh by the same margin. The men ran into more trouble, dropping both matches to their opponents.

The women’s victory over Bucknell was particularly meaningful as the day marked the first win against Bucknell in five seasons. Colgate took the doubles points with ease, securing wins at the first and third spots in the lineup. Sophomore Alex Petrini and her partner, senior Stephanie Brown, demol-ished the competition with an 8-3 score, while juniors Merideth Rock and Jackie Finn teamed up to take an impressive 8-1 win over their opponents. The two squads split singles points down the middle.

Unfortunately, Colgate could not keep up the pace as it went into Saturday’s matches. The Raiders lost 4-3 to Lehigh on the road as they failed to take the doubles point. The team came back with a 6-4, 6-0 win in the third singles spot, but Lehigh took the next pair of matches to take a 3-1 lead. Colgate needed to sweep the last two matches but was unable to do so and dropped the day.

The men rode a bumpy trail and walked off the courts this weekend without a win to their name. On Friday, Bucknell took the doubles points with triumphs in the top two positions. Sophomore Bobby Berkowitz and junior Harry Jewett were the only doubles team to secure a Colgate win, taking down their Bison opponents 8-6.

The teams divided the singles matches evenly between them, with each taking three wins to their scorebook. All but one of Fri-day’s singles matches extended to three sets.

The men took on Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa. the following day. The men struggled once again as they dropped the second dou-bles points of the weekend. In singles play, sophomore Luke Gensburg was the only Raider to take down a Lehigh opponent, de-spite dropping the first set. Colgate finished the Patriot League season with a 1-4 record. The team is slated to play Binghamton at 4 p.m. on April 18 at home.
