Men’s Tennis Aces the Competition

The Colgate men’s team triumphed with a weekend win over University of Rochester Sunday at Sanford Field house, 6-1.

The men came out to an early lead when they secured the doubles point as the Raiders took home wins in all three doubles matches.

In the top position, juniors Alec Goldstein and Parker Lewis won by an 8-4 margin, followed by sophomore Luke Gensburg and junior Sean Spellberg with a close 9-8 win of their own. Sophomore Bobby Berkowitz and junior Harry Jewett also took down their opponents in a 8-3 win.

On the singles game, the Raiders were similarly successful. Colgate tallied another point when Berkowitz came out victorious in his singles match to kick off the Colgate domination.

Goldstein posted another point with a straight set win to boot at 7-5, 6-3. With the momentum overwhelmingly on their side, the Colgate men continued to power through the University of Rochester team.

Gensburg took on Boris Borovcanin in the top spot and was able to win in straight sets. First, he set the tone with a convincing 6-1 score. The second set was pushed into a tie-breaker, but the Patriot League Rookie of the Year won the challenge in a 7-6 tally to take the match for Colgate.

Senior Connor Feuille and first-year Alan Pleat followed suit with triumphs in the fifth and sixth spots.

For his part, Feuille won 6-1, 7-6 in straight sets. Pleat convincingly took the court with a pair of 6-2 wins. Spellberg played in the fourth spot and unfortunately fell short.

“This was a clean, efficient and strong effort for the men,” head coach Bobby Pennington said. “Three wins in a row feels great, but with Siena coming up, a fourth-straight win would be even better.”

The Raiders are slated to go head-to-head with Siena on March 3 at 2 p.m. in Loudonville, N.Y.
