“Remember, Remember the Fifth of November!” The legacy of the historic Guy Fawkes Day was celebrated last Friday at the Parker Apartment Commons from 10:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. Historically, the celebration began on November 5, 1605 in England when Guy Fawkes was arrested for attempting to blow up the English Parlia­ment. Guy Fawkes Day later began as an opportunity for people in England and around the world to celebrate the plot’s failure. Today, people from all over the globe can be seen wearing the traditional Guy Fawkes mask on this faithful day of the year.

In order to rekindle the festive spirit that Halloween provided for our com­munity and kick off Guy Fawkes Day, the Colgate Ballroom Dancers and Late ‘Gate held their fourth annual Guy Fawkes Masquerade Ball. Students were encouraged to dress up formally and practice their skills on the dance floor. This event featured dancers of all differ­ent abilities and skill levels coalescing for the love of dance.

“We arranged this event to give stu­dents an opportunity to come out, dance and have some fun,” head of the Ballroom Dancing Club senior Jack Daly said.

On the dance floor, students and party­goers could be found wearing the tradition­al Guy Fawkes mask from V for Vendetta while busting a move to their favorite pop and traditional music genres. In order to take a break from the rigors of the dance floor, students could be spotted laughing and enjoying a wide assortment of foods and drinks. The event provided those indi­viduals that did make it to the Parker Com­mons with a warm, amiable and easy-going party experience.

“This event serves as a way for people to come together from across campus and learn ballroom dancing in a fun so­cial setting for use at future formal social functions or even at the Jug,” Daly said.

In addition to generating awareness for the much overlooked Guy Fawkes Day, this dance party served as a way to foster interest in ballroom dancing and formulate understanding within the student body about the potential benefits of learning how to dance ball­room gracefully. Attendees of this event gained a key education about the rich culture and tradition that comes with ballroom dancing.

“This is my first time, so I didn’t know what to expect. I don’t ballroom dance, but I still come to have fun with my friends. It’s a nice place to hang out. A great alternative to the usual social scene at Colgate,” sophomore Hoa Bui said.

Students had the opportunity to enjoy a unique celebration that mixed Hallow­een-like masks, great music, lively dances and colorful decorations.
