Swimming and Diving Teams Lose at Home

Colgate Swimming and Diving kicked off the 2010-2011 season this past weekend. Both the men and women were defeated at home at Lineberry Natatorium by SUNY Buffalo on Saturday. The men’s team lost 104-165, while the women lost by a much smaller margin, 144.5-152.5.

The men managed just two wins on the day – one individual race and one relay race. Junior Teddy Perley earned a victory in his first race of the season with a time of 1:00.97 in the 100-yard breaststroke, besting his closest opponent by 0.38 seconds.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Perley, sophomore Dan Sweeney, senior Tucker Gniewek and junior Costas Hadjipateras also came out on top, as each member of the team boasted splits under 22 seconds.

Unfortunately, Buffalo came away with the rest of the events and claimed the overall victory.

The women fared a bit better on Saturday, as they had a highly competitive meet, earning nine individual victories throughout the day.

Senior Caren Guyett and sophomore Lia Kunnapas claimed two first-place finishes each, while senior Erin McGraw, junior Erica Derlath and sophomore Ryan Marynowski all added victories to their records as well.

Sophomore Kim Pilka contributed as well, earning two victories in diving.

The Raiders were unable to finish first in the two relays, however, and it cost them the overall win.

The men will begin Patriot League competition this Saturday, hosting Lehigh at Lineberry Natatorium. The meet is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.

The women have a week off from competition before they compete in Boston the first weekend of November.
