The Colgate golf team turned in a solid performance this past weekend, finishing 7th at the Rehoboth Beach Invitational. Maryland won the event with a score of 579, with Colgate finishing 51 shots behind the leader.

Sophomore Ben Jessen led the Raiders attack over the weekend, starting off with a solid 75 and finishing two-day event with a score of 153. Fellow second-year Josh Spellman finished right on his heels with a 156, and the rest of the Raider squad, Neil Thompson, David Ake, Chase Williams and Nick Parry turned in strong performances as well.

The one disappointing aspect of the weekend was that the Raiders finished just one stroke back of rival Lafayette, who finished with 629 to the Raiders’ 630.

“It is always disappointing to finish behind Patriot League teams no matter by how many strokes,” Spellman said. “We all know how much better we could have actually played as a team, so one stroke in the final standings is extremely disappointing.”

This tournament, hosted by Penn and played at Kings Creek Country Club in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, featured some powerhouse schools, but Lafayette is a team that the Raiders would hope to beat.

Luckily, the Raiders will get another shot at the Lafayette squad next weekend as they travel to Easton, Pennsylvania for the Lafayette Invitational.

“We hope to come out next week and have the best tournament so far this spring,” Spellman said. “After 3 weeks of practice we have worked out all the kinks and we can now play to our

full potential.”
