Swimming and Diving Sets Sail in Syracuse

The women’s swimming and diving team had few red marks against it last season, but one of them was an opening day loss to Syracuse. However, that loss was avenged in a huge way with an astonishing and superb 201-92 win over ‘Cuse on Friday, October 10 at Syracuse.

The seniors and sophomores led the way for ‘Gate in this one. On the relay teams, senior Emily Murphy, senior Bev Walker, sophomore Caren Guyett and frst-year Emily Peck won the 200 medley, and senior Ashley Bottger replaced Peck on the 400 free meet to take home the gold. Murphy, much like Leisel Jones in the Olympics, dominated the 100 breast and won the 200 breast as well. Guyett showed her versatility in taking the 500 free and 200 fly. Bottger swam like a dolphin when she sped to wins in the 50 and 100 free, and sophomore Erin McGraw, the Rookie of the Meet at Patriots last year, showed that a sophomore slump is not in the cards by taking the 200 back and 100 fly. Sophomore Becky Fisher was Colgate’s go-to girl on the diving board, as she took home wins in the one and three-meter events. Walker(100 back), Peck(200 IM) and senior Lisa Marchi(200 free) also won events.

On the same day, the men’s swimming and diving team fell to the Syracuse Orange by a final score of 184-104 at Webster Pool. Despite the loss, many of the competitors put forth admirable efforts. In the diving competitions, junior Joe McGovern earned Colgate’s only two victories in the meet. However, in the swimming realm, five swimmers earned second-place finishes. Sophomore Tucker Gniewek placed second in the 50 and 100 freestyles. Sophomore Tyler Coolman and first-year Teddy Perley both placed second in the 200 and 100 breaststroke respectively. In his debut, first-year Costas Hadjipateras earned a second place finish in the 200 free. Rounding out the impressive finishes was sophomore Trevor Healy, who placed second in the 1000 free.

Both teams will host Patriot League rival Lehigh on Saturday, November 1 at Lineberry Natatorium. The meets will kick off at 1 p.m.
