Anyone who knows anything about Colgate swimming has heard the name of senior Marc Faulkner. It’s everywhere: in the Raider record books, the team’s website and in conversation among teammates. .

The senior breaststroker can be found ranked in the top-10 Colgate performances in the 200m individual medley, the 200m and 400m medley relays and the 800m free events. He explained that the highlight of his swimming career at Colgate came most recently at this year’s Patriot League Championships, where he broke an 11-year varsity record in the 200m breaststroke. His finish helped Faulkner achieve first-team all-Patriot League honors this season, after garnering second-team honors in his junior season.

Both in and out of the water, Faulkner is quick to gets to the point. Perhaps it is this type of attitude that has served him well in his years swimming. When asked about specific obstacles or challenges faced while swimming, he summed up his experiences well.

“The whole thing is a challenge,” Faulkner said. “You have to like the challenge. I’ve enjoyed it, but I’m done now.”

Faulkner has had a few hiatuses from swimming over the years. The senior starting swimming when he was six years old and continued until he turned 14, then took a break until high school, when he picked up the sport again.

Faulkner credits the Colgate swimming team with motivating him to stick with the sport after taking his sophomore year off, allowing him to come back for his last two years at Colgate.

“The team inspired me,” he said. “I made some great bonds.”

After taking some time off, Faulkner decided he missed the sport enough to make a come back. “I missed the team and, of course, the competition and the opportunity to stay in shape,” he said.

Not surprisingly, the philosophy major kept his other extracurricular activities in the pool: he has also been a member of Colgate’s water polo club while not competing for the Raider swimming and diving team.

Meanwhile, his post-graduation plans are not yet solidified: “Nothing is definite yet, but I’m looking to be working,” Faulkner said,

As to a future caree rinvolving swimming? “No, I am done,” he said.
