The Raider men’s soccer team came into Saturday’s game against the University of New Hampshire with a three-game winning streak. After shut-out wins against Fordham, Cornell, and Albany, the team appeared to be unstoppable. Seniors Reed Grimes, Jon Cook and Peter Bourquin as well as sophomore goalkeeper Doug Litvack have all had fantastic starts to the season. Unfortunately, the team was not able to continue its streak when it traveled to Durham, NH and left with a 1-0 loss. “We had three-to-four good chances in the first half to jump out in front-it should have been 2-0 at the half,” said Raider coach Mike Doherty. “Missed opportunities always come back to haunt you.” The teams played evenly for the majority of the game as the first 74 minutes of play did not yield a goal. Even though the offense was unable to pull through, Doherty thougt the “defense and goaltending continues to play well, giving up just two chances.” The defense finally broke, however, when Wildcat Ross Fishbain sent a cross to teammate Geoff Sanford, who headed the ball into the back of the net. This put UNH in the lead and secured the team’s win. The goal also broke 345 minutes of shutout play for the Raiders. With Litvack still on the sideline thanks to injury suffered last week against Albany, first-year Josh Cohen made his first career start for Colgate and played well. He made two saves, but unfortunately his record fell to 1-1.The statistics showed how even the two teams were, as UNH held a one-shot advantage in shots while both teams took four corner kicks. “We need to continue to defend well and finish the opportunities we get,” Doherty said prior to Wednesday’s game against Philadelphia University. “We need a victory at Philly to head into Saturday’s league match with Lafayette with a positive mindset.” The Raider’s gave their coach exactly what he wanted. Colgate notched its fourth shutout victory of the season as they defeated Philadelphia, 2-0. The win was also number 399 of all-time for the Raider men’s soccer program. Cohen and Bourquin both played strong games, and sophomore Devin Deane scored his first goal of the season.Deane led off the scoring by putting the ball in the net at the 36:59 mark off the first of two assists by Grimes. Bourquin added an insurance goal in the 52 minute mark, as Grimes once again set up the scene. The Rams were held off by the powerful Raider defense. The backline came back after a disappointing loss to New Hampshire, with Cohen playing another great game in goal is notching his second career win. Even though Philadelphia out shot Colgate 13-12, Colgate held the advantage in corner kicks 5-2.Tomorrow’s game against Lafayette marks the start of the Patriot League season as well as the first chance possible for the Colgate men’s soccer team to gain win number 400 for the program kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
