The Raiders have faced tough competition this past week, with their game against Providence resulting in the team’s first loss. The Friars took the lead in the 20th minute, but Colgate first-year forward Abby Sotomayor answered back with a shot on goal, followed by attempts by junior midfielder Eliza Doll and first-year defender Dom Demarco. Unfortunately, the Friars took the 1-0 lead into halftime. The Raiders came into the second half strong, tallying three shots in the first five minutes, which Providence keeper Kristyn Shea saved. In the 71st minute, Providence scored again, sealing the win with three more goals in the final five minutes.  Head coach Kathy Brawn believed that her team came out flat against a team who was on fire.

Last Friday, the Raiders faced Yale. Senior forward Sarah Coy put the Raiders on the scoreboard early in the game when the Yale goalie, Alyssa Fagel, misplayed a clear that Coy capitalized on. Coy easily placed the ball in the back of the net in the 14th minute.  Colgate first-year keeper Kelly Chiavaro made her first save of the game in the 16th minute, followed by two more Yale attempts.  The Colgate defense played strong, and despite Yale’s additional scoring attempt, the Raiders entered half time with a one-goal advantage.  The Raiders started the second half with five shots in the first 20 minutes, yet Yale ultimately sent the game into overtime.  

In the first overtime period, Coy attempted a shot that was saved by Fagel. In the 98th minute sophomore midfielder Martina Loncar attempted a shot that was blocked by Fagel. The game entered the second period of overtime, and although Sotomayor, Lewis and Pullen each took shots, the game ended in a draw. 

On Sunday, the Raiders played Central Connecticut State (CCSU). Colgate’s first-year keeper Kelly Chiavaro made her first save of the game only minutes after the starting whistle. The Raiders fired three more shots at the CCSU’s goalkeeper, Nicki Turley. Colgate had possession for the majority of the half and outshot the Blue Devils 7-0 in the next 20 minutes. CCSU had three shot attempts, but the game was scoreless going into halftime.  

The second half was similar to the first, with the Raiders holding the shot advantage, but the score remained 0-0 after regulation. In the 98th minute of overtime, Colgate had a corner kick, but failed to convert. CCSU found the back of the net in the 102nd minute, ending this heartbreaking game with a Blue Devil victory.  

Colgate looks to get back on track this week. Their next game is against the University of Connecticut on September 15 at Beyer-Small ‘76 Field.
