Campus construction continues to progress as Colgate University moves closer to the vision outlined in the Third-Century Plan, which launched in 2019. Among the updates includes changes to the design of 70 Broad Street, also known as “the Loj” by its residents, who are largely part of Colgate’s Outdoor Education program. The University revealed the changes in an article posted to its website Feb. 3, which highlighted the vital role of construction in transforming the college.
“This work will both complete the physical campus and help to fully realize the University’s potential to become one of the most important undergraduate colleges in the country,” the article read.
The gutting of the interior of 66 Broad Street, the chapter house of Delta Upsilon, has been completed alongside the construction of a new roof on the building’s north side. Construction is on schedule to be completed by this summer.
Next door, at 70 Broad Street, plans for ‘the Loj’ were changed because the existing layout of the building did not allow for safety features, including fire sprinklers, to be installed. Based on this finding, the structure was approved for demolition by the Village of Hamilton Planning Board. Construction on a new building in its place, which maintains the same yellow design as the original plans, is set to begin this spring.
In town, construction on the 18-22 Utica Street has progressed, with the apartment and mixed-used complex on track to be completed later this year. As foundational elements of the mixed-use building have been completed, further additions — such as the installation of windows and plumbing systems — will begin in March.
Up the hill, the under-construction Peter’s Glen will see the planting of trees once the weather warms. As planned, cold winter weather paused construction, but the new outdoor area is still scheduled to be completed later this year.
