Students rely on their music to escape reality and reduce stress. Music provides immediate satisfaction and anxiety relief when hitting the play button. But have you ever found yourself stuck in a music slump, craving new artists and genres to soothe your ears but not enough time to explore your options? You find yourself caught in a cycle of listening to the same artists and songs for years, headphones connected and primed to silence the world, but lost in what music to play.
As busy college students juggling loads of homework and extracurricular activities, it is challenging to find time to search for new music. Hunting for new artists is scary, sorting through millions of them to discover one that captures your fancy; It is time-consuming and a struggle.
Problem solved! Listening to the live albums pieced together by your favorite artists eliminates the worry of enjoying the songs and adds an exciting thrill to beloved albums. Live albums can energize you differently, combining the true voice of the artists with a wide audience. These elevated vibes create a transformative appreciation for the songs because the artist’s authentic self is displayed.
Personally, “24 (Live)” by Zach Bryan has been blasting through my headphones since I discovered it a couple of weeks ago. The fusion of his raspy live voice and the audience’s cheers take me back to the live concert I attended. I am addicted to the live album because the songs are a combination of various locations, and they were personally picked by Bryan because they reflected a top-tier performance.
Sophomore Leo Li, a fellow Zach Bryan listener, couldn’t agree more.
“[‘24 (Live)’] is definitely a collection of Zach Bryan classics, but to listen to them in live version is yet another experience. The incomparable passion and sudden impromptu all adds to the excellence of the album,” Li said.
Jack Humphrey, writer for Country Central, examined Bryan’s personally crafted live album.
“The album’s tracklist reads like a cross-country journey, featuring performances from iconic venues and cities across North America. On each stop of the tour, [Bryan] made a point of sharing a full recording of the show his fans attended with them. ‘24 (Live)’ is a remarkable compilation of all 25 of the stops on the Quittin Time 2024 tour,” Humphrey said.
Additionally, the live album includes songs from all different albums, designing a unique range of songs rather than listening to a singular album. Some tunes date back to his first album in 2019, “DeAnn,” to his recent one in 2024, “The Great American Bar Scene.”
Maxim Mower, news editor for Holler, expressed his opinion on listening to “24 (Live)” and how it is unique in comparison to Bryan’s recorded albums.
“‘24 (Live)’ offers a visceral snapshot into what it’s like to be immersed in a jubilant crowd cheering along to Bryan’s powerful, introspective ballads and his fierce, defiant anthems,” Mower said.
Mower’s description of the live album accurately reflects the added advantages of listening to it.
The live album highlights the instrumentals and Bryan’s powerful vocals that are processed out and masked in the pre-recorded albums. The acoustic bass, electric guitar, viola, violin and drums are just a handful of the instruments Bryan showcases. In his song “Oak Island,” Bryan demonstrates his team’s musical ability by inserting an entire minute of instrumental performance before beginning his vocals. The pre-recorded version does not include this additional minute of extraordinary talent. These definite moments of improvisation expose their musical skill and ability to be outstanding performers.
Melissa Ferrick, another American songwriter, reflected on her experience recording a live version of an album in a review by Northeastern Global News.
“There are some notes that are out of tune,” Ferrick said. “I had to laugh at it in the studio and remain true to my belief that a live performance is a magical, beautiful thing, and it will never, ever happen again exactly the same way.”
Ferrick highlights the magic of how live performances present the artist’s elevated talent that can not be captured in the recording studio. Live albums allow fans to embark upon this immersive listening experience and appreciate the artist’s true talent.
The live performance fosters a deeper connection between the listener and the artist. Bryan retells anecdotes from his life or stories describing a song’s origin in the concert version album. Before singing “Nine Ball,” Bryan shared the inspiration behind the tune. Bryan expressed that he wrote this song after his father told him a story about how he was forced to shoot pool with his father at the local bars. Going beyond the beat and melody, the listeners understand the storyline of the song, allowing them to appreciate the emotions expressed in the lyrics.
Since each song is derived from a different concert, the crowds react with distinct flares of energy and passion at each performance. At Bryan’s show in Philadelphia, he sang “The Great American Bar Scene” and altered the original lyrics to make the performance guided toward his Philadelphian fans. While performing, Bryan switched the chorus lyrics to “The Great Philadelphian Bar Scene,” and the crowd erupted with excitement. These personalized changes display Bryan’s spontaneousness and his consideration to make his performances unique for his supporters. The small changes in the live album make it far more entertaining because each song brings an exclusive touch.
Additionally, Bryan collaborates with other artists, and the pre-recorded songs do not compare to the live features. In the live album, Bryan brings forth these featured creators. For example, “Hey Driver” played in Washington, D.C. features The War and Treaty, the co-creator of “Hey Driver.” The live album not only highlights Bryan’s authentic voice but he showcases many of his collaborators, making the live album full of diverse musical skills.
Music can reduce stress and boost mood, but it can fail to accomplish this when you are stuck listening to the same tunes. Exploring the live albums published by your favorite artists can elevate your musical adventure and uncover an addicting cathartic experience. Live albums offer endless entertainment and authentic melodies that are significantly richer than studio-produced albums. Whether you are blasting Zach Bryan’s live album or any other artist, you do not have to face the stress of searching for new music, and you will never encounter a dull moment.
