At first glance, Her Campus seems like any ordinary modern news site, as it frequently publishes articles about a wide range of topics online. However, beyond the website’s trendy design and eye-catching graphics lies a community of entirely female writers.
Her Campus, a community founded by and for college women, states that they are the leading media platform designed to empower college women across the globe. The Her Campus community spans across hundreds of college campuses and allows young women to experience a transformative time in their lives together.
This media environment curates a unique experience that is positive and uplifting for women, who are able to pursue and write about their interests, needs and aspirations. This makes the content relatable for college women, as they explore topics that develop their authentic selves.
Her Campus covers a variety of issues such as health, fashion, pop culture, campus news and career development. This community welcomes women of all backgrounds and interests and allows women to explore the world of journalism if they so desire.
Ashley Dunbar, a first-year student and writer for Her Campus, explained the role that the publication has at Colgate University.
“The purpose of Her Campus is to create a safe and empowering community for female writers to express their interests,” Dunbar said. “Each article dives into a variety of topics — whether it’s pop culture, politics or personal experiences — allowing women to connect and engage with content that resonates with them.”
First-year Margot Wheeler, the current treasurer of Her Campus, elaborated on this idea.
“The club also fosters a strong community of college women across all class years at Colgate. The company’s mission is to empower young women by giving them a voice and helping them navigate important milestones in their personal and professional lives,” Wheeler said.
Colgate’s Her Campus chapter has published articles about music, cultural debates, sports, fashion trends and hobbies — truly allowing their female writers to embrace the topics that will make them feel most fulfilled.
When Dunbar publishes articles, she typically covers fashion trends. Seasonal trends, basic day-to-day outfits, or discussing celebrity looks on the red carpet have been topics Dunbar has been passionate about exploring.
“Being in an all-female group has given me the freedom to write about topics that genuinely interest me,” Dunbar explained. “The supportive environment encourages creativity that makes exploring the topics I’m passionate about without hesitation [easy].”
Wheeler was initially hesitant and intimidated about joining the executive board, which is made up of largely upperclassmen, as a first-year student. However, she soon fully embraced the role as treasurer due to the supportive environment of Her Campus.
“Working with an all-female group has been really nice, as all members of the club are very supportive and collaborative,” Wheeler said. “In an all-female club, collaboration feels very natural, and at events and meetings, there is a lot of open dialogue and collaboration that makes the environment feel very welcoming.”
Sophomore Cate Abate reiterated this sentiment, adding praise for the club’s presidents, senior Alisa Kukharkin and junior Felicia Paul.
“They’ve inspired me to become a better writer and write about what I’m passionate about,” Abate explained. “Their leadership in Her Campus has fostered a supportive community at Colgate where I and many others have found creativity and confidence on campus.”
Her Campus is more than just a publication — it’s a vibrant, empowering community for college women to explore their interests, share their voices and empower one another. By fostering an inclusive and supportive space, the club enables young women to develop their authentic selves. Whether it’s through writing about reality TV or sports, the platform provides a unique outlet for creativity, collaboration and growth.
