The Colgate University softball team has had an outstanding season, currently holding the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League as the playoffs approach. The team consists of 15 players, making them a small but mighty group. Much of their success has been due to the rigorous hours and time spent training. From lifting sessions to competitive practices — both in season and during the offseason — players are constantly pushing themselves and each other to hone their skills. As they begin preparing for this final tournament, some reflected on how they’ve felt the season has gone so far.
Senior Alexa Acker commented on a major factor that has helped contribute to her own accomplishments and the team’s success: her teammates’ support for each other.
“A huge part of my success has come from the support we have for one another as a team,” Acker said. “We cheer harder for our teammates than we do for ourselves, and that creates so much confidence for everyone. I think that confidence has really shown through in the success we’ve had on the field this season. We know that no matter the situation we face, we are prepared, and we know that our teammates believe in that as well.”
Through the tight-knit relationships formed on the team, players have created a supportive environment where they are there for one another through all the highs and lows that come with competitive sports. By building confidence and trust in each other, the team has been able to build a network of rapport that is greater than the sum of its parts and has helped them secure wins throughout the season.
This season has been especially exciting for junior Nora Megenity, who recently broke Colgate’s single-season home run record. Megenity said the achievement was one of the many high points for her during this season.
“Honestly, I had no idea I was on track to break the single-season home run record,” Megenity said. “I was just playing my game and taking every at-bat as an opportunity to help my team. We all put in so much work, so it is super cool to see all of our work pay off.”
However, the team’s main goal remains the same: to secure more wins as the season winds down.
Senior Maya Servedio described how the team is preparing for the remainder of the Patriot League season and their expectations heading into the tournament.
“Right now, our focus is on making the Patriot League tournament,” she said. “We’re taking it one game at a time and trying to enjoy the process. Going into it, I expect us to keep doing what we’ve done all season: compete hard, stay together and have fun in the meantime.”
The team still has two more games to play to obtain a spot in the tournament, but the Raiders are taking it one inning and one game at a time.
As the postseason approaches, the Colgate softball team carries not only momentum but a strong sense of unity. Through the hours of hard work and trust in one another, this group truly demonstrates what a team is meant to be. As this is a final farewell for seniors Acker and Servedio, both players mentioned how much this season has meant to them.
“This has undoubtedly been the best season I’ve had here, both on and off the field,” Acker said. “I’ve never been part of a team this close.”
“This season has been incredibly special,” Servedio said. “Every person on the team has been supportive and locked in on what we’re trying to accomplish. I truly couldn’t have asked for a better senior year experience.”
