Colgate Couture: Outerwear Everywhere

We have finally reached that time of year when the leaves have fallen, the wind has picked up, and the sun sets shortly after those 2:45 classes. Sweaters and scarves are no longer enough, yet it still seems a bit premature to break out the puffers and UGGs. However, it’s still time to bundle up, and with this season’s options, we no longer have to sacrifice fashion for function.

Recently, there has been a coat revival  in the fashion world. Since campaigning begun, Michelle Obama has never been spotted looking anything but put together. Her style consists of sheath dresses, belted cardigans, bold colors and of course, long coats. Her coat choices stand out, while also having a way of pulling the look together. Who can forget that gorgeous lemongrass Isabel Toledo coat she wore on Inauguration Day? Her classic yet memorable outwear options remind me of those belonging to Jackie Kennedy. Always looking effortlessly chic, this style icon favored A-line dresses, pillbox hats and a classic coat for every outfit.

Outwear also dominated the Fall 2009 runways. Yves Saint Laurent stunned with leather trench coats, while Burberry kept classic with tweed. Stella McCartney stood out with bold colored wool coats, and Hermes updated their outwear looks by trimming them with fur. This season really showed there’s an option for everything. Whether you’re looking to stay classic in plaid wool or branch out with a fur vest, you should regard your outwear as one of the most important pieces of your look.

This fall, experiment with different transitional options. The best thing about short jackets is that you can try various materials while not looking completely overkill. Leather and suede bomber jackets are great while it’s not too cold out. Pair them with a patterned scarf and you will look instantly styled. Faux fur vests are another favorite of mine, and I have definitely spotted them being embraced up the hill. They’re perfect to layer over tees, sweaters, and even other lightweight jackets.

Pea coats and short wool jackets are also great for fall. Keep them current by looking for fun patterns and colors. Plaid printed coats and tweed jackets can also make an outfit. Steph Boutique has some adorable and reasonably priced options from Kensie and BB Dakota. Pair these with skinny jeans and riding boots and you will be the epitome of fall fashion.

As the temperature continues to drop, be sure to transition your outerwear accordingly. Bundle up in this season’s ever-so-chic long wool coats. Think red, purple and yellow to stand out in the sea of black options that tend to overwhelm the quad. Also, look for different styles and detailing like toggles, high necks and pleating. You can even add your favorite belt as an easy way to both structure and personalize your coat of choice.

For you guys, this season’s men’s outwear has also proved to be filled with great options. Adding a great jacket can clean up your outfit for class and keep you looking sharp while out on the town. Try a canvas utility jacket, a classic leather option or even dare to sport those trendy buffalo check jackets. Long wool coats are also my favorite men’s option for cold weather outerwear. Topcoats range from classic to fashion forward, and are versatile enough to pair with every look. Add a brightly colored puffer vest under them for chilly mornings up the hill. Match them with a button down and nice jeans for simple yet styled date look. Long military pea coats and wool trenches are also great options for keeping you look put together.

So let’s break away from our Patagonias and embrace this season’s functional yet stylish outwear. With an option for every look, mood, and temperature, who says you only have to stick to one? Take a risk with faux fur, be bold in bright yellow, or keep it classic with a trench coat. Whatever your choice, just remember that the outwear options are endless. No longer are coats just about keeping you warm. They are the best way to complete any look while also highlighting your chic-self!
