Men’s and Women’s Rowing Kick Off Spring Season

The Colgate men’s and women’s rowing teams returned from a long off-season eager to build on a succesful fall.

The women began their spring season two weekends ago at the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia. The team entered boats in the JV 8+ race and the Varsity 8+ race. In the JV race, the Raiders finished fifth in their heat and twelth overall with a time of 7:26:90. The varsity team clocked in at 7:01:04, good for third place out of fifteen in their heat, but fifteenth overall out of twenty-four teams.

The Men opened their season in Camden, New Jersey at the Knecht Cup. Three Colgate pairs competed in the varsity event. The Raiders’ A pair, consisting of senior Kurt Miller and sophomore Sam Walker, placed first in their heat with a time of 7:39:4. However, in the finals of the varsity pairs event, it was Colgate’s B team that emerged with a third-place finish, four seconds above Colgate’s A team. The B team consisted of senior Wille Fox and sophomore Matt Woodrow. Colgate had two boats in the coxed varsity four events. In the first heat, Colgate A came in a close second place, falling to Mercyhurst by four seconds. Colgate B also placed second, with a time of 7:05:02. Unfortunately, in the final, Colgate A capsized, and was unable to finish the event. Colgate B, however, came in fourth place with a 7:25:07 time.

The women’s team will travel to Williamstown, MA this weekend to take on Williams College. The men will host Hobart College on Lake Moraine on Saturday, here in Hamilton.
