In the thick of fall, Hamilton has been experiencing its fair share of rain. Accompanied by crisp temperatures and shorter days, the damp weather might make you want to curl up with a good book and some hot tea in your dorm room. This week’s 13 Beats features a soundtrack fit for embracing the cozy vibes or — for those brave enough — dancing in the rain:
1. “Exile (feat. Bon Iver)” – Taylor Swift (2020)
Gazing at gray clouds with drops of water falling on my window, I love to listen to the haunting piano melody in this passionate duet. “I think I’ve seen this film before,” Taylor Swift and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver sing about recognizing patterns of toxicity in a relationship.
2. “Bless the Telephone” – Labi Siffre (1971)
Labi Siffre communicates the powerful joy that comes with talking to a long-distance lover on the phone. “It’s nice to hear your voice again / I’ve waited all day long / Even wrote a song for you,” Siffre sings. The heartfelt lyrics, simple chords and short length give the song a timeless feel.
3. “Storms” – Fleetwood Mac (1979)
Beyond its apt title, “Storms” is the perfect track for a rainy day, with slow and deep guitar chords and earthy vocals. Stevie Nicks sings, “I’d like to leave you with something warm / but never have I been a blue calm sea / I have always been a storm,” about feeling truly free after a breakup.
4. “Motel 6” – River Whyless (2018)
River Whyless conveys the conflicting emotions of how to cope without a lover, blending mellow folk and upbeat rock styles. The lyrics “for the first time, I’m terrified of wakin’ up alone” emphasize how scary having to move into a new phase of life can be.
5. “She’s Always a Woman” – Billy Joel (1977)
Billy Joel’s sweet ode about a woman he loved in 1977 is always a heartwarming listen. “She can do as she pleases, she’s nobody’s fool,” Joel croons, admiring her strength and sense of self.
6. “Shrike” – Hozier (2019)
“I couldn’t utter my love when it counted, ah, but I’m singing like ’bout it now,” Hozier sings in this melancholic song about taking a relationship for granted and wishing you could go back to appreciate it. The guitar tones and ethereal production remind me of my time studying abroad in Ireland, Hozier’s home country, and looking out on the misty Cliffs of Moher.
7. “Cigarette Daydreams” – Cage The Elephant (2013)
“Cigarette Daydreams” is my pick for splashing in puddles and letting raindrops soak your clothes. “You can drive all night, looking for the answers in the pouring rain,” Matt Shultz sings about trying everything you can to make sense of a breakup.
8. “About You” – The 1975 (2022)
In my opinion, this is the ultimate yearning song to listen to during this fall to winter transition. Matty Healy repeatedly sings, “Do you think I have forgotten about you?” to convey the impact his past lover has on his longing thoughts.
9. “A Little Bit of Everything – Spotify Singles” – Lizzy McAlpine (2023)
Lizzy McAlpine’s cover of Dawes’s track gives me goosebumps. Her warm tone conveys lyrics about the complexities of life and the multitude of experiences that we all go through.
10. “Slow Dance” – Clairo (2024)
“When candles burn out and the record is faded down, I know you’ve got people to turn to,” Clairo sings in this track about questioning a lover’s priorities. The light drumbeat is a perfect accompaniment to drizzles outside.
11. “Motion Sickness” – Phoebe Bridgers (2017)
This emotional and raw anthem is my go-to for singing along during a rainy car ride. “I have emotional motion sickness,” Phoebe Bridgers sings about the implications of an unstable relationship with a power imbalance.
12. “Lady May” – Tyler Childers (2017)
Tyler Childers sings about the love he has for his wife in this warm and slow country ballad. Lyrics like, “Now I ain’t the toughest hickory that your ax has ever fell, but I’m a hickory just as well,” depict how Childers’s wife has made him feel like he’s enough and always makes me feel happy and cozy.
13. “Dog Days Are Over” – Florence + The Machine (2009)
“The dog days are over,” repeats Florence Welch about finding happiness and getting out of a slump. Grab your umbrella and dance in the pouring rain to this track for the most cathartic and surreal listening experience.
