This matcha overnight oats recipe combines hearty oats and the drink craze of the moment. Making your creation requires one trip to Hamilton Whole Foods in town, where you can collect your ingredients and maybe even grab one of their delicious wraps or smoothies while you are there. If the idea of walking to town in the snow and cold is too much to bear, take a cruiser from the top of the hill right into town!
The recipe follows a similar premise to “build your own creation.” You can choose either honey or maple syrup for a sweetener (or neither), you can opt out of Greek yogurt or chia seeds and you can even use instant coffee if matcha isn’t your jam. The only thing you really can’t skip is rolled oats and milk.
If you do decide to go for instant coffee over matcha, it will add loads of flavor to your overnight oats — much more flavor than matcha and I find the coffee flavor less subtle and smooth. The matcha offers an earthier blend, which pairs quite well with the vanilla and honey, so it is my personal favorite.
The tricky thing about these ingredients is that they are spillable. Make sure to have a dust buster on hand in case the chia seeds go flying — they are remarkably difficult to pick up once they have dispersed.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of rolled oats
- 1 spoonful of Greek yogurt
- 1 splash vanilla extract
- A healthy squirt of honey or maple syrup
- 1.5 grams matcha or instant coffee stick
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1 spoonful of chia seeds
- Fruit to top
Instructions:
- Mix your almond milk with your caffeine of choice. (This can be a slight issue as most dorm rooms don’t have frothers on hand. Forks do work, but you might have a surprise clump of matcha or instant coffee waiting for you in the morning.)
- Add the mixed milk creation to your oats
- Add the vanilla, Greek yogurt, honey and chia seeds and mix.
- Arrange the fruit on the top
- Refrigerate overnight
- Enjoy in the morning!
This recipe is dorm and apartment friendly, so whether you’re braving ’Gate House or cozied up in a townhouse, save yourself some time, support small businesses and enjoy a nutritious and energizing breakfast to help you get through the long winter ahead.
