Colgate University’s study abroad program earned first place among baccalaureate colleges for international travel across a mid-length duration in this year’s annual Institute for International Education Open Doors Survey. According to the survey conducted for the 2023-24 academic year, 441 Colgate students studied abroad. 

This recognition represents a surge from last year’s report for 2022-23 where Colgate ranked third in the same category with 359 total study abroad students. Colgate’s consistency as a leading institution for study abroad reflects the various off-campus study options that attract students to travel each year.

“63% of Colgate students participate in an off-campus study program before they graduate,” Colgate’s Off-Campus Study Office reports on its website.

Off-campus study at Colgate boasts both domestic and international offerings across three different program models: study groups, approved programs and extended studies. 

Study groups are faculty-led, semester-long programs for students still interested in studying with other Colgate students and learning from Colgate professors. Approved programs also offer students the opportunity to study off campus for a semester in programs sponsored by other institutions. 

For students interested in a shorter offering, extended studies often span two weeks in the off-campus component and consist of an on-campus course the semester prior to travel. Most commonly, third-year students partake in the semester-long options, while extended studies allow students across all class years to travel. 

Although the deadline for study groups has passed, the approved program application is still open for eligible students through Feb. 4. For more information, students can research program offerings on the Off-Campus Study portal.
