Hamilton Village Real Estate LLC recently listed the Old Stone Jug for sale with a starting price of $1,700,000. The listing was framed as an opportunity to own a piece of Hamilton’s history, and a location dear to many students and alumni. The primary site dates back to 1900 and has seen many uses over the years, including functioning as a restaurant, jail house, hotel and hospital. Its current use as a bar only began after the end of Prohibition in 1933.
The Jug’s path has been significantly shaped by the Koen family and John Koen, who have owned a residence above the Jug since 1964. In a 2017 article by The Maroon-News, Koen stated his intention to preserve the Jug’s history amid his plans for retirement in the future. The Maroon-News reached out to Michelle Koen, the property owner according to Madison County property records, but she did not provide a comment.
The Jug sits on a property of 0.24 acres and has a listed property type of SFR — Single Family Residence. The Jug is entering the market without a (transferable) liquor license according to New York State Liquor Authority records, which, with the residential SFR classification, would compound costs for a potential buyer hoping to continue the Jug’s history as a bar.
